At Least 20 Dead in Brussels' Train Collision

HALLE -- At least 20 are feared dead after two trains collided head-on Monday morning outside Brussels, Belgium.

According to Belgian broadcaster VRT, the trains collided at around 8:30am near the city of Halle, some 10.5 miles southwest of Brussels. Local media reported that the death toll could be as high as 28, but authorities have not confirmed this number.

A Belgium government official, speaking to a local radio station, said several passengers were seriously injured. Some, he said, needed amputations.

Right after the collision many passengers posted comments of the accident on Twitter, with one passeneger writing that he believed the train ran a red light.

Another said the first two cars were "completely shredded." A third passenger wrote that the collision was "brutal." Several others said the train comming into a station did not break.

The crash occurred at the spot were tracks for domestic and high speed trains meet.

The high-speed passenger rail service known as Eurostar, which connects London with Paris and Brussels, has been cancelled for Monday, Eurostar's press office said.
