French director Romans Polanski has to remain in prison so it can be extradited to the United States to faces charges for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977, a Swiss court said on Tuesday.
The Swiss Criminal Court said that releasing Polanski on bail posed a high risk of him flying away.
Polanski’s French lawyer, Hervé Temime, told the AFP press agency that his lawyers would appeal the decision rendered by the Swiss court.
“We’re going to try to bring stronger and more appropriate guarantees, we’re going to try to demonstrate that there is no risk to order the release of Roman Polanski,” he said.
Swiss police arrested Polanski at Zurich airport on September 26. He had traveled to Switzerland’s capital to attend the Zurich Film Festival where he would have received a Lifetime Achievement Award. He could be extradited to the United States.
