NEW YORK -- The Yankees are the winners.

The New York team beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 on Wednesday night winning their 27th Series' title at their newly built stadium. It is their first World Series title since the year 2000.

“It takes a lot to get here,” said catcher Jorge Posada just minutes after the last out. "You never know when you are going to get back here. This says a lot about our team,” he said.

Hideki Matsui was the player of the night and the Major League Baseball organization recognized him with the Most Valuable Player award.

Matsui started it all off for the Yankees with a two-run Home run in the second inning. Then doing it again in the 3rd with bases loaded hitting a single to center field bringing home two runners. Then again in the fifth with Derek Jeter in third base and Alex Rodriguez in first, hitting a double to right field bringing two other runs for a total of 6 RBI's, tying a World Series record with Yankee Bobby Richardson who did it in 1960.

On the Yankees bullpen Andy Pettitte became the second pitcher to win all three clinching games of a postseason –Boston’s Derek Lowe did it in 2004. Pettitte, who came back after a three day rest, worked for five innings and two thirds, allowing four hits, five walks and three strikeouts. But he was a better pitcher than the Phillies’ Pedro Martinez who was gone at the end of the fourth inning after allowing four runs, three hits and two walks. The Phillies put to work five of their pitchers, while their offensive was beaten non-stop by the Yankees’ pitchers.

At the top of the eight inning Damaso Marte got the first out for the Yankees; but the New York team manager Joe Girardi decided that was all Marte needed to do. It was time to bring Mariano Rivera to save the game. And he did.

On the anniversary of Mariano’s lowest moment as a Yankee, back in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series when he blew the game in Arizona, Rivera have just given the Yankees fans what they have all been asking for since getting a new stadium. The crown has been delivered to the Bronx.
