HAVANA -- New pictures of Cuba’s former president Fidel Castro, published on Monday, show him using a headrest wheelchair.
It’s the first time Mr. Castro is seen using such a medical chair since he underwent surgery in 2006 after suffering gastrointestinal bleeding, causing him to relinquished power to his brother Raul who’s been in charge of the island nation since then.
The pictures were released by Nicaragua’s official website 19Digital, which said were taken during two visits Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega paid to Castro in April and December of 2009.
Most of the pictures were taken at Fidel Castro’s house in the neighborhood of Jaimanita, Havana, which he shares with his sons and wife Dalia Soto Del Valle.
The pictures also show a white van that Castro climbs from the back while holding onto its handrails, which seems to help him keep balance. This last picture was taken at a protocol house Nicaraguan president Ortega stayed in while he was in Havana and where Castro visited him. Castro’s wife can be seen inside the van with dark sunglasses and a white adidas sport coat.
