Haiti has received over $1 billion from Americans since the earthquake struck that Caribbean nation on January 12, the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University reported on Saturday.

According to experts who track charitable giving, donations from Americans for earthquake relief in Haiti passed the $1 billion mark as of Friday. About one-third of it has gone to the American Red Cross, they said.

Other major recipients of Haiti donations include Catholic Relief Services, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF and the U.S. wing of Doctors Without Borders.

These funds were half of what Americans donated for Katrina ($2.1 billion) in the six-and-a-half weeks after the catastrophe hit New Orleans.

The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University has been monitoring donations received by 91 charities engaged in Haiti relief since the quake struck.
